Daily ejaculation: an effective solution to reduce sperm DNA fragmentation

Sperm DNA fragmentation has a significant adverse effect on human fertility, contributing to higher rates of miscarriage and in vitro fertilization (IVF) failures.

A study exploring the effectiveness of daily ejaculation

A recent study conducted by Drs. Durga Gedela Rao and Krishna Mantravadi from the Oasis Fertility clinic in Hyderabad, India, explores the effectiveness of daily ejaculation to reduce sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF) and optimize reproductive outcomes in infertile men. The study recruited 40 men aged 25 to 45 with SDF greater than 25% and a previous IVF failure.

Participants were asked to ejaculate daily for one week before the oocyte retrieval procedure (OR). On the day of OR, a semen sample was produced with less than 24 hours of abstinence, divided into two aliquots: one used for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and the other for SDF evaluation.

The results of the study

The results showed that the mean SDF before daily ejaculation was 39.37% (values ranging from 26 to 66%) and dropped to 19.66% (values ranging from 1 to 30%) after one week of daily ejaculation. The fertilization, blastocyst formation, clinical pregnancy, implantation, and live birth rates were 94.5%, 48%, 63%, 56%, and 55%, respectively. The miscarriage rate was 8%.

The results are impressive. The study concludes that daily ejaculation is an effective intervention to reduce SDF and improve reproductive outcomes in infertile men. This method is economical, easy to implement, and avoids the need for invasive interventions like testicular sperm extraction. The study received no funding, and the authors declared no conflicts of interest.

The analysis of sperm DNA fragmentation at Fertilys

At Fertilys, the importance of sperm DNA integrity is well recognized. Unlike other laboratories, the analysis of sperm DNA fragmentation is an integral part of the basic semen analysis at Fertilys. This approach allows for better identification and treatment of male infertility causes, offering couples better chances of success in their assisted reproduction journey.
